Thibaut Octave : Bonjour ! Comment tu t’appelles ?
Hello! What’s your name?
Olivier : Je m’appelle Olivier.
My name is Olivier.
Can you tell us more about what happened to you?
I had a fall at the gym. It was about 20 years ago. I was doing AGP, which stands for Artistic Gymnastic Production. It's a discipline that has several disciplines. We know it better because it’s a more popular sport with the girls. That's where they practice with the hoop, the ball, the clubs, that kind of thing on the floor. One of the disciplines is more practiced by men, it's called hand to hand, lifts or acrobatic flights. It's when you have a bunch of people doing slow-motion tricks and balancing on top of each other. People vulgarly call it a human pyramid. There are two of us, three of us, etc. They are lifts.
There are the carriers and the flyers. I have an average size which allowed me to be a flyer because I had buddies who were very muscular and who could carry me and I could also be a carrier because in the group there was my little sister and I was strong enough to carry her. So I was between the two.
But this time I was a flyer and I was standing on someone's shoulders. I was at a height of 1,80 m. My hands were on his shoulders and I slipped. I fell with both arms on the ground. I bounced off my arms and did what is called a bone rip. This means that there is the muscle and the tendon that is attached to the bone and that it is not the tendon that broke but the little piece of bone. At the time I was in pain, not screaming for death but I was in pain.
We went to the hospital around 10pm and I met an intern who was a bit of a quiche and who told me "Oh there's nothing! You put some cream and a bandage and tomorrow it will be better". I was in pain but not to the point of being bent in half. I believed him because I had taken a blow and it was normal to be in pain. Of course, the next day, when it hadn't changed a bit, my mother told me that it wasn't okay and that we should go see someone else. I did an X-ray and they saw what was going wrong right away.
I have recovered most of my extension. It doesn't show much but my arm is not 100% extended. It's 95 or 97% extended or something like that. If I carry a heavy suitcase at arm's length for a long time, for example, I'll get pins and needles. It will tingle and go down my hand and I have to change arms. It doesn't hurt and it's a little discomfort.
T.O. : Ça te fait quoi aujourd’hui quand tu vois ta cicatrice ?
How does it feel today when you see your scar?
Olivier : Ça me rappelle cette période.
It reminds me of that time. It was a good time! I remember the friends I was doing this with, it was a time when I got along well with my little sister. And it was a time when we were champions of France! You never forget that! I really have only good memories, only positive ones!
And when you see other people's scars, how do you feel?
It will depend on the scar. Sometimes it's ugly and what I mean by that is that it really messes up the morphology, the body line and I get a twinge of sadness. And then, is it a girl, is it in the face? And also I wonder what happened to the person and if they suffered at the time of their accident or not. It depends on the scar. Sometimes there are some that are heavy to bear. Then you say to yourself it's a pity that you didn't get it a little later with the new technologies, the science that advances, etc., maybe it would have left less traces. Or maybe you had a butcher for a surgeon.
I see that the one I have on my foot for example, every time I showed it to a physiotherapist or osteopath or people whose job it is to heal, every time they told me it was beautiful. It is clean, beautiful and well made. And yet it shows much more than the other one.
And on this one you can tell us more?
I actually have two but the other one is smaller. I had a hallux valgus. It is the big toe that goes a little inward and as it was like that the one next to it had to compensate for the width was the opposite towards the outside. The surgeon therefore operated so that everything would be straight. It’s a thing which is formed with time. When it is pronounced, you are obliged to have surgery because when you get older it can only get worse with arthrosis and it becomes painful.
I hurt myself playing soccer. I sprained my ankle. I waited for it to go away and it didn't. The surgeon I saw told me that it was because of the hallux valgus if the pain I had every day didn't go away. Since I would have ended up having this operation with age anyway, I asked him if it was worth it to do it while I was young to recover quickly. He replied that it was indeed better but that I could do it whenever I wanted. I made the decision to have the surgery as soon as possible. The surgery went very well but it was when I woke up that I was a little confused. Then for two months my foot was really swollen and painful.
Unfortunately, it was not necessary to put it on the floor to rest and at the same time the surgeon did not want it to rest too much because the longer it is left without doing anything, the more rehabilitation there is. It can also become deformed if it is not used. I had to walk even though I was in pain. That's why he didn't prescribe crutches. It was a little hard. But hey, even though he wanted me to walk, I was still in bed at home from morning to night for two months. It didn't stop me from working because I'm a freelancer, but it was a little difficult.
The return to sport was also complicated because I had to go gradually. It seemed like an eternity. But I only did three and a half months, four months, which is not much when you know that it can be six months or more. But I am athletic and in good physical condition. I had to be patient. And I have another hallux valgus on the other foot. But if it doesn't go off, or when I'm very old, there's no point in operating on it.
