Thibaut Octave : Bonjour ! Comment tu t’appelles ?
Hello! What's your name?
William : Bonjour ! Je m’appelle William.
Hello! My name is William.
What's the story with your scar, William?
Le chirurgien me prévient, ça va durer 10 minutes. Donc ok, parfait.
So I was coming home from fencing, I had a big bag on my shoulder and at the entrance of the apartment there was a huge glass umbrella stand. And as I turned around to close the door I knocked over the glass umbrella stand with my bag, which had completely broken. So, all right, I pick up the pieces and cut myself once on the middle finger of my right hand and once over the pinkie of my left hand. It' s deep. I have a chance to heal very quickly, so very quickly I can resume fencing. Except that actually on the right hand it's exactly where I'm holding my sword and with the rubbing it creates two scar balls inside. These two scar balls were 5 and 8 millimetres long and were against the artery and against the nerve, and when I was holding my sword it hurt very, very much. I ask my GP who thinks it was a piece of glass that remained. He sends me for an ultrasound. The ultrasound doesn't detect a piece of glass. I'm going to see a surgeon. He thinks it's a piece of glass or a scar inside the skin. Whatever it is, it has to be removed. The surgeon warns me, it will take 10 minutes. It's a sham operation, it's really very quick. So okay, perfect.
J’y vais. Je me fais anesthésier. Je me marre avec l’anesthésiste qui s’amuse à me prendre le bras, je le sens pas. Il me lève le bras, limite je me le prends sur la tête. C’est vraiment assez incroyable comme truc.
I go. I'm getting anaesthetized. I'm laughing with the anesthesiologist who's having fun taking my arm, I don't feel it. He lifts my arm, I almost take it on my head. It's really quite incredible.
The surgeon operates on me and there during the whole operation I can hear him moaning: "Oh fuck! What the fuck?! ». In fact, originally there was only supposed to be one scar ball and not two. And they weren't supposed to be this close to the nerve and the artery. So he's opening up a lot more than expected. So there you see it's a "V" scar of about 2 centimeters by 2 centimeters, which was not at all expected at first. So he lifted the skin a lot more than expected. He scraped a lot more than expected too. Instead of 10 minutes, the operation took ¾ an hour. The surgeon grumbled during the whole operation. He didn't stop. Then, it's going really well, okay. I was immobilized for a while until I regained mobility.
First post-operative consultation, the surgeon sees me and he goes: "You! The fencer there! " (laughs). He remembered me because he had such a hard time with that little shit. In the end it went very well. I got my mobility back very quickly; 99% mobility in flexion and extension. That's the advantage of healing very quickly. I had a little bit of physio to reduce the size of the skin. I'm starting to recover my sensitivity at the level of the scar, so everything is fine.
T.O. : Ça veut dire quoi pour toi quand tu vois ta cicatrice aujourd’hui ?
What does it mean to you when you see your scar today?
I figure I can bullshit my son. (Laughs) I could tell him that I got attacked by pirates or I got into a fight with a shark or something like that. Otherwise, in itself, I'm a bit clumsy. I'm not very good at big moves. I'm good at small moves or when it's very meticulous, but as soon as it's big moves you can't count on me. I'm clumsy. So there you go. I had a huge bag. I didn't think to put it down. That' s fucked up! Well, that's the way it is. I have a scar. It's my first one. I think I'll have a story to tell. That's it. There you go. This is gonna be fun.
T.O. : C’est quoi ton rapport aux cicatrices ?
How do you relate to scars?
I've got some buddies who have scars, but really light scars on their fingers, on their arms. I've got another one that comes from a vaccine that we used to make at the time and the shot never actually healed. It's quite normal. For years I had it pink. It was pink, like candy, for about ten years. I used to play with it. It was kind of my trademark, but I didn't mind. I see a scar. Okay, fine. I got a buddy who had a huge scar all over her knee when she had surgery. Never did anything to me. My brother had a huge scar. He's got another huge scar on his hand. It's not unusual. I really don't have a problem with that.
